I just wanted to take this time to thank all of you for being a part of this site and also supporting me. it’s been almost 2 months here at “tarylljackson.com” I’m just putting the final touches on the first D8 project so It’s been pretty busy around here. I’ve been working on the D8 project as well as writing with my brothers and also working on a few other things 4 different artists. If you’ve been following me on twitter you already know I’ve been watching the NBA playoffs too! But aside from that it’s been pretty much music. Well, getting straight to the point. I was just wondering…. what’s on your mind? how are you doing? Any questions, thoughts, opinions, suggestions…. i’m listening.

as you know i’m doing everything on my own over here and little by little it’s coming together. first and foremost I want to thank all of you for your love, support, comments, and yes your criticisms too. (I forget who it was, but one of you told me to “stick to the ballads.” after reading that i decided to actually write a ballad which turned out to be “it’s over now.” so i thank you for that.
after doing a bit of research, i’m going to try using a service called nimbit. basically it’s direct-to-fan, and it’s very easy to use which is exactly what i need!! you will see the nimbit omt (online merchant table) when you visit “my store.” It’s still foreign territory for me, so again it’s trial and error.
you are ALL very appreciated… stay tuned, lots more coming.

it’s over now
(looking back)
there’s so many things that i would change
(looking back)
i could of done some things a different way
(looking back)
there’s a few things i should have never said
(looking back)
won’t help cause now it’s too late
don’t know what i was thinkin’
i should have known that things were headed this way
we were so in love but now you’re leavin’
all those years we just threw down the drain
cause it’s over now (it’s over now)
and we’ve finally come to the end of the road
yes it’s over now (it’s so over now)
and the hardest part is just letting it go
but it’s over now
we fuss and fight every night over all the stupid things
and the respect has completely gone out the window
now maybe i’m the one to blame
we keep pointing fingers so i guess it goes both ways
don’t know what i was thinkin’
i should have known that things were headed this way
so in love now you’re leavin’
all those years we just threw them away
and it’s over now (it’s over now)
we’ve finally come to the end of the road
it’s so over now (it’s so over now)
and the hardest part is just letting it go
it’s so over now
there’s nothing we can do girl it’s just too late
there’s nothing we can do girl too late to change
we were so in love but now you’re leavin’
i can’t believe it girl
still can’t believe that it’s over now…

In my previous post I tried to give you an inside look at how the song was constructed. I made a special “in the studio” version breaking down the track, making it easier for you to hear all the elements. Now that you’ve heard the “in the studio” version, here’s the complete song.

just say the word
just say the word babe
just just say the word
baby close your eyes
and tell me what it is you see
whatever’s on your mind
i can make it a reality
(so come on baby)
just say the word and let me change your whole life
all you have to do is say you’ll be mine
(so come on baby)
come on and take a chance
you’ll be so glad you did
see what it’s like to get whatever you wish
love like never before
cause i’ll always give you more
the sky’s the limit girl tonight
anything you want
you will never go without
anything you need
i’ll make it happen girl no doubt
just say the word babe
just just say the word
i know what you’ve been thinking
and the answer’s starring you in your face
baby make your move
it’s up to you
all you have to do is say that you will be mine
(so come on baby)
so come on tell me everything that you like
and you’ll have it for the rest of your life
(so come on baby)
just say the word and i will give my all to you
all i’m asking for is just one try baby
anything you want
you will never go without
anything you need
i’ll make it happen girl no doubt
just say the word babe
just just say the word
baby you don’t have to look any further
to hurt any further, to cry any further
all of it can go away today
and all you have to do is say you’ll be mine
girl anything you want…
anything you want
you will never go without
anything you need
i’ll make it happen girl no doubt
just say the word babe
just just say the word

Before the Neko LX5
I was using the The “Timbaland Special Edition” TSE Miko.
My goal was to make my home studio as compact as possible without jeopardizing sound quality or putting any limitations on my creativity. These machines by Openlabs were exactly what I was looking for. The perfect solution and I couldn’t be any happier with them.
The Miko TSE is an all-in-one music production workstation and it became the centerpiece of my studio. I did however keep a Yamaha Motifxs6
and a MPC 2500
just in case I had to send in my Miko for a repair or modification. Well long story short, I took the Miko on a trip to the UK with me. Everything was fine going there… coming back was a different story. When I got home I opened the road case for my miko and noticed one of the side panels had completely broken off! I called the tech support at Openlabs (which is amazing) and I sent it in for a repair.
Around this time my cousin Austin asked me to help him with his home setup. When I got to his place I noticed he had several keyboards one of them being the Motifxs6. We started talking and I explained what had happened to my Miko and how bummed I was because of the downtime. He knew I had the Motif and told me to really check out the sounds.
Later that night I went home to my empty studio. Off to the side was the Yamaha Motifxs6, the MPC 2500 was at TJ’s house. I decided to plug up the Motif and check it out. I went through the different sounds and decided to make a beat. I started with a kick on the downbeats. 1-2-3-4… added the snare on the 2 and 4 then a little perc. Nothing complicated in the rhythm section, pretty straight forward. Next I went for some synths… A simple little chord pattern. The basic track was done in no time. I was getting tired so was about to head for bed, but decided to record this melody I had in my head before I lost it. So I’m mumbling these melody ideas with random words here and there. By the time the song reached the end, the concept and hook was formed. I decided to go back and lay down the hook backgrounds. As I did that, I heard harmony parts. The song was starting to take shape quickly. I kept hearing different ideas and I kept laying them down as they came. Funny how a quick 5 minutes turns into hours? Well, I ended up not sleeping that night, instead I stayed up and finished the song.
this is a bit repetitve, but just so you know what you are listening to
Here’s a special clip of the song. I start off with just the kick and add the snare so you could identify with how I created the track. As the song develops I added more instruments tambs, perc. etc. and then the basic chords I played with the synths. Try to pickup all the different elements as they come in. From there it’s the chorus with the background vocals. In the bridge section, I add my lead vocal and breakdown the second half so you can hear the other various background parts. After the bridge section, I slowly take out instruments, breaking the entire song right back down to the basic kick I started with.

digital8
Technology has forever changed the recording industry. I believe it has opened many doors and continues to create great opportunities in the music world. Because of the internet and this new digital age there is now an easy platform for artists to communicate and connect directly with their audience/fanbase. I’m starting a series of EP’s that will consist of 8 songs. These “mini albums” will be available only for digital download at tarylljackson.com and other internet music stores such as Itunes, Rhapsody and Amazon mp3. My goal is to release one or two digital8 EP’s a year. The digital8 project will allow me to share more music in a consistent and direct level. This is my experiment with music in the digital world.

- how the “coffee bean song” became “2much4me”
A few months ago a friend of mine wanted a small portable music setup. He wasn’t really into music, but wanted something he could just play around with and record his ideas. I gave him some pointers and showed him a few things on his computer music program. We then headed to the music store and bought these small (25 keys) midi controllers. About an hour later, he sent me a text saying he was on his way to a movie but wanted to thank me again for my help. I replied with a picture telling him I was in the city on Robertson and Beverly making a track in Coffee Bean!!
I told him to check his email after he got out of his movie. I sent him a track called “coffee bean song” 20 minutes later. I was using the built-in audio driver from my laptop with some heavy plugins, as a result you can hear dropouts in the strings/pads.

From there I put the song onto my Ipod and headed to the car. I listened to the “coffee bean song” all the way home and ideas and melodies started coming to my head. By the time I got home (25-30 minutes) I had a complete hook (with lyrics) and different verse melodies. I transferred the song files over from my laptop to my desktop and spent the next few days embellishing the track. I added a real bass on top of my synth bass, changed a couple of the drum sounds to tighten it up, added some drum fills, piano, lead lines, and various synth sounds with different rhythmic elements to make it groove better. I never really used that keyboard again, but I’ll have the song forever. Here it is….. -> “2much4me”

“proud” is a song I wrote for my mother. Although it’s not finished, today is her birthday and I thought I would share it with you.
